Insurance Basics

Smiling family of four outdoorsEvery dental insurance plan is a unique agreement between a patient, their employer, and an insurance provider. These plans typically require you and/or your employer to pay a monthly premium. In return, the insurance provider will cover a specified percentage of the cost of necessary dentistry services. These plans place an emphasis on preventive maintenance and provide the highest amount of coverage for these services, typically between 80 and 100%. More advanced restorative services and orthodontic treatments are typically covered at lower percentages between 50 and 80%. Other treatments like dental implants and cosmetic dentistry do not typically receive insurance coverage. For those services that are covered by your benefit plan, you will receive a percentage of the cost of treatment up to an annual plan maximum.

In-Network Coverage

Man in dental chair talking to dentistThe majority of dental insurance plans are created in order to allow patients flexibility in choosing the best dentistry practice for their needs. However, there are in-network dentists who have existing agreements with dental insurance providers. These offices have agreed to the pricing set by your insurance provider for specific treatments. That means you’ll only ever have to pay for the out of pocket percentage of treatment. Out of network providers can charge higher fees for their services, but you will need to pay for the price difference as well as your out of pocket treatment percentage. In most cases, the difference in pricing is minimal, but it’s important to take this into consideration when choosing a dental office. We are happy to provide in-network dental coverage for the following insurance providers:

  • Aetna
  • Delta Dental
  • BlueCross BlueShield
  • And more – please contact us if you don’t see your insurance provider here

Maximizing Insurance Benefits with Preventive Care

Woman in dental chair talking to dentistDr. Ayer and his team focus their dental services on prevention. Our goal is to partner with patients to keep their smiles healthy. This is important for oral health since untreated dental issues can dramatically worsen in even a very short time, leading to the need for advanced dentistry services. Dental insurance providers recognize the importance of prevention as well, and they provide the greatest amount of coverage for these treatments. In most cases, your dental benefit plan will cover 80 to 100% of the cost of preventive dentistry services. By visiting us for preventive care, you’ll receive the greatest amount of insurance coverage. These appointments significantly reduce your risk for more advanced dental health concerns that require more advanced treatments covered at lower percentages by benefit providers.
